Spartanburg was founded in 1785 and incorporated in 1831, named after the Spartan Regiment that fought in the American Revolution. Known as "The Hub City" because railroad lines once radiated from downtown like spokes on a wheel, Spartanburg grew into one of the South's great textile centers — at its peak, over 40 cotton mills operated in and around the city.
Today, Spartanburg is a city of nearly 39,000 residents reinventing itself through advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and higher education. BMW's Greer plant is a short drive away. Denny's corporate headquarters calls Spartanburg home. The city hosts seven colleges and universities — including Wofford College, Converse University, and USC Upstate — giving it one of the highest concentrations of higher education institutions per capita in the country.
Downtown Spartanburg has undergone a significant revival. Morgan Square anchors a walkable core of locally owned restaurants, breweries, art galleries, and the Chapman Cultural Center. The Rail Trail connects neighborhoods on foot and by bike, and the city's cost of living remains well below the national average — drawing young professionals, families, and retirees who want Upstate access without Greenville pricing.
