Greer
A Great Place to Live, Work, and Play
Life in Greer
Greer was named after James Manning Greer, a Scottish settler whose family owned the land where the Richmond and Danville Air Line Railway built a station in 1873. "Greer's Station" became a thriving stop between Atlanta and Charlotte, attracting merchants, blacksmiths, and physicians. Incorporated in 1876, the town grew into a textile manufacturing center with mills like Victor, Franklin, and Apalache driving the local economy for decades.
Today, Greer is a city of over 35,000 straddling the Greenville-Spartanburg county line — and it's booming. The BMW Manufacturing plant, located just outside the city limits, is the largest BMW factory in the world by volume, producing over 400,000 vehicles annually. The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) sits adjacent to the city. Together, they've turned Greer into an economic engine for the entire Upstate region.
Downtown Greer has preserved its small-town character through careful revitalization. The Greer Downtown Historic District features walkable blocks of locally owned shops, restaurants, and the Greer Heritage Museum housed in the original 1939 post office. The Greer City Park and events like the popular Greer Family Fest keep community bonds tight. It's a city that managed the rare trick of growing fast without losing its identity.
