Lake Hartwell
One of the Southeast's Great Lakes — 56,000 Acres of Opportunity
Life in Lake Hartwell
Lake Hartwell is named after Nancy Hart, a Revolutionary War heroine who lived on the Georgia frontier and became legendary for her fierce devotion to American independence. The massive reservoir was authorized by Congress in 1950 and completed in 1962, created by damming the Savannah River where the Tugaloo and Seneca Rivers converge. The result: one of the largest recreation lakes in the Southeastern United States.
The numbers are staggering. Lake Hartwell encompasses nearly 56,000 acres of water with 962 miles of shoreline, extending 49 miles up the Tugaloo River and 45 miles up the Seneca. Interstate 85 bisects the lake, making it easily accessible from both the South Carolina and Georgia sides. The lake serves multiple purposes — flood control, hydroelectric power, and recreation — but it's the recreation that defines life here. Bass fishing tournaments, sailing regattas, and weekend boating draw visitors and residents year-round.
The communities along the South Carolina shore range from Anderson and Seneca to smaller lakeside developments. Clemson University's campus sits along the lake's shore, adding game-day energy and college-town amenities. Lakefront homes range from modest cabins to luxury estates, and the market attracts a mix of retirees, vacation homeowners, Clemson alumni, and families seeking waterfront life at a fraction of coastal prices.
