Life in Powdersville
Powdersville gets its name from its gunpowder heritage. In 1859, John Bowen established a powder mill in the area, and during the Civil War it served as a gunpowder storage site. The name "Powders" stuck, eventually becoming Powdersville — a quiet community in northern Anderson County that sat largely under the radar for over a century.
That changed fast. Powdersville's population has nearly doubled since 2000, climbing from 5,362 to over 10,000 by 2020. The catalyst is location: sitting right off Interstate 85 at exits 39 and 40, Powdersville is just 8 miles from downtown Greenville. The Saluda River forms the northeast border with Greenville County, and Pickens County is a stone's throw to the northwest. It's an Anderson County address with Greenville County access.
Despite the growth, Powdersville maintains a distinctly suburban-rural character. The community got its first high school — Powdersville High — only in 2011, reflecting how recently the area transitioned from country to suburb. New development mixes with established neighborhoods, and the I-85 corridor brings retail and dining within easy reach. For buyers wanting space, newer construction, and lower taxes than Greenville County, Powdersville checks every box.
