Fountain Inn
The Diamond Tip of the Golden Strip
Life in Fountain Inn
Fountain Inn got its name the old-fashioned way — from an actual inn with a fountain on the old stagecoach route between Greenville and Laurens. Drivers called the stop "Fountain Inn" and the name stuck. A small garden fountain at City Hall commemorates the original, and a marker on the north side of town shows where the old inn once stood.
Today, Fountain Inn is one of the fastest-growing cities in the Upstate with a population of over 10,400 — a 33% jump since 2010. Straddling the Greenville-Laurens county line and sitting right off Interstate 385, the city offers small-town charm with easy access to Greenville (17 miles northwest) and the broader metro area. New residential development, a revitalizing downtown, and strong community spirit have made it a magnet for families seeking affordability without sacrificing convenience.
Main Street runs through the heart of town along SC Highway 14, anchored by local shops, churches, and community events like the annual Aunt Het Day festival — a tribute to syndicated cartoon columnist Robert Quillen, one of Fountain Inn's most famous residents. The city's nickname, "The Diamond Tip of the Golden Strip," reflects its position at the southern edge of the Greenville-to-Mauldin growth corridor.
