Travelers Rest earned its name the honest way — it was the last comfortable stop for settlers heading north into the Blue Ridge Mountains from the South Carolina coast. Founded in the late 1700s along what is now US Route 276, the town served as a staging point for the long climb into the Appalachians. That spirit of welcome and rest still defines the place today.
TR, as locals call it, has transformed from a quiet mountain-adjacent town into one of the Upstate's most sought-after communities. With a population of roughly 7,800 that's grown over 70% since 2010, the city punches far above its weight in food, outdoor recreation, and community spirit. The Swamp Rabbit Trail — a 22-mile paved greenway connecting TR to downtown Greenville — has become the backbone of the town's identity, drawing cyclists, runners, and families year-round.

Furman University was annexed into city limits in 2018, adding academic and cultural depth.
